In 1987, during my senior year at Hendersonville High School, I found myself at the heart of a storybook chapter in our town’s sports history. It wasn’t just that both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams had reached the Class 1A North Carolina High School Basketball State Championships, it was the way everyone in Hendersonville became part of the adventure.
I remember getting up early to travel to Chapel Hill with a good friend. As we traveled, we saw all the vehicles decked out with handmade posters, red and white streamers flapping from antennas, and windows painted with “Go Bearcats!” Laughter and school chants spilled out as we wound our way through Interstate 40 to Chapel Hill, sunlight flickering across the dashboard. The anticipation was electric, and every pit stop at a gas station turned into a mini pep rally. It felt as if the whole town was holding its breath, united in hope and pride, our hearts beating in sync. For me, and everyone who made that journey, the experience was more than just watching a game—it was living a dream together, every mile and every cheer pulling us closer, every moment steeped in the color and spirit of our home.
We streamed into the brand-new Dean Smith Center—the legendary Dean Dome, its glass façade sparkling in the late afternoon sun. Inside, the polished hardwood gleamed under the arena lights and echoed with the thunder of thousands of feet. The roar of the crowd before the game against North Duplin was deafening as our 27-2 boys’ team burst onto the court, their warm-up jackets flashing with school colors.
So many memories flood my mind: Scott King igniting the stands with fearless drives to the basket. The Combs twins weaving through defenders in a blur of coordinated moves. Rodney Young soaring above the fray for rebounds. Marvin Featherstone orchestrating each play with calm, determined authority. Every moment felt momentous—the slap of the ball, the swish of a net, the eruption of cheers—while the gym crackled with possibility and nerves. The memories would be seared into our hearts long after the final buzzer, as Hendersonville won a hard-fought 80-73 victory, clinching the championship in a thrilling display of grit and teamwork.
Then many of us walked across campus to the legendary Carmichael Auditorium, which our Bearcat Nation transformed into a cauldron of sound and color. Red and white banners draped from the bleachers were awash with fans wearing spirited face paint, waving homemade signs, and stomping their feet in rhythm. The gym pulsed with energy as we watched the girls’ team trade baskets with Gates County, every possession a nail-biter. I can still hear the thunderous applause after Andrea Carter’s go-ahead jumper near the end, the squeak of sneakers against the polished hardwood, the sharp whistle blasts slicing through the noise, and the collective gasp when the buzzer sounded. Hendersonville 50, Gates County 47.
In the joy, strangers hugged and our little town launched into a mighty celebration.
