Because you had so few players in 1991-92, the coaches often scrimmaged with the team. What was that like?

“Since our coaches knew each of our individual games so well, it required us to really execute and think when scrimmaging. When you play a limited amount of players you have to play smart. We won a state championship because when were the smartest team in the state in ’92.”

With the team so short handed, making foul trouble an especially big deal, how did that affect your ability to play aggressively?

“I do not remember many games where we had early foul trouble. Our defense and rebounding were extremely efficient and fundamental. Also, with the half-court offense we ran, we controlled the pace of the game.”

What surprised you most about that season?

“How close we became. We genuinely enjoyed being around each other, on and off the court. Teams will sometimes have tension at different times during a season. Once the pieces were in place we became family.”

As a transfer, how long did it take for you to feel chemistry with your teammates?

“The friendships really started around Halloween. Maybe a couple of months into the school year. But the chemistry on the court started to develop right after Christmas break when we totally changed our offensive sets. I think we started the season off with 3 wins and 4 losses. After Christmas we won 21 games with 1 loss (to West Henderson).”

What did you learn out of the way Coach Wilkins adapted his style of play to fit that team?

“I can honestly say, I don’t know if I really could appreciate it at the time as much as I could later. He showed his range of knowledge of the game. His desire to win was greater than his ego. As a former coach myself. I have won lots of games because of another coach’s ego getting in their way.”
